A Chosen Generation: Unveiling The Significance

Even though the Bible says that believers are a chosen generation, many Christians don’t live as a chosen generation because they don’t fully understand what the term implies. This article focuses on explaining the meaning and implications of a chosen generation.
Scriptural Reference
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. (1 Peter 2:9 KJV)
The Meaning of A Chosen Generation
God had always wanted a generation of people with His nature, people He could call sons of God. For this reason, when God decided to create Adam and Eve, he made them in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27 KJV), meaning they had God’s nature at creation.
Hence, Adam started a generation of people with God’s nature and gave birth to Cain and Abel. Afterwards, Cain killed Abel, lost God’s nature, left God’s presence, and started a new generation of people without God’s nature. From Genesis 4:16 to Genesis 4:22, the Bible lists the names of people who belonged to Cain’s generation.
Genesis 5:1 states that the chapter is an account of Adam’s generation, created in God’s likeness, which is His nature. From Genesis 5:1 to Genesis 5:32, the Bible lists the names of people who belonged to Adam’s generation.
Remarkably, Seth was the first son of Adam in the generation (Genesis 5:3 KJV). Although Cain was the actual first son of Adam, after killing Cain, he couldn’t remain in the generation of people with God’s nature because he soiled his hand with blood. He then started a different generation of people without God’s nature.
Hence, two generations existed then. The first was Adam’s generation, a generation of people with God’s nature — sons of God. The second was Cain’s generation, which had sin in their hands and didn’t have God’s nature. They were ordinary men.
Genesis 6:2 says that the sons of God married the daughters of men, meaning that men from Adam’s generation (a generation of sons of God — people with God’s nature) married ladies from Cain’s generation (a generation of ordinary men without God’s nature). The intermarriage polluted the generation of sons of God and brought it to an end. That didn’t go well with God because He wanted a generation of sons of God who would have His nature. For that reason, He destroyed the whole world (Genesis 6:7).
Afterwards, God, who still needed a generation of sons of God, sent the last Adam, Jesus, to reconcile humans to Him and form a generation of sons of God. God gave those who believed in Jesus the power to become sons of God (John 1:12 KJV). In other words, Jesus formed a new generation of sons of God. Those who receive Christ become born again — born of God. Since they are born of God, they become sons of God.
This new generation of sons of God is what today’s scripture calls the chosen generation. We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people and a holy nation. Although we were conceived in sin and committed sins, Jesus’ blood washed away our sins when we received Christ, making us born of God — sons of God.
Implications of a Chosen Generation
- Interestingly, 1 John 3:9-12 teaches that we shouldn’t love one another as Cain, who killed his brother. The passage asserts that because we are born of God and have God’s seed, we cannot sin. In other words, the first implication of being a chosen generation is that we lose the ability to sin. Those who profess the name of Jesus but still live in sin have not yet become born of God. If not, God’s seed in them will make them live precisely like Jesus (1 John 4:17 EASY).
- Another interesting implication of being a chosen generation is that we are resurrected with Christ and are seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6 KJV) far above all principality, power, might, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but in that which is to come (Ephesians 1:20-21 KJV). In other words, as a chosen generation, we operate in a realm higher than the devil and his agents. We are children of the Most High God and cannot be attacked by the devil. Unfortunately, many people who profess Christ suffer many afflictions because God’s children go into captivity when they lack knowledge (Isaiah 5:13 KJV). Nevertheless, anyone who gains the right knowledge becomes free (John 8:32 KJV).
