But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. (Matthew 5:34-37 KJV)
What Does Swear Mean?
It does not mean using foul, coarse, or blasphemous language in this case. It means solemnly declaring that a statement or something is true or promising to do something.
When people swear, they usually use God’s name, heaven or their lives to make others believe their statements are true or to affirm that they will fulfil a promise.
Why We Shouldn’t Swear
In today’s passage, Jesus states that swearing by heaven is wrong because it is God’s throne. Many people practised this in Jesus’s time, which is still common today. Here, Jesus warns that we shouldn’t do it again because heaven is God’s throne.
Jesus also warns against swearing by the earth, stating that it is God’s footstool., which was more common in Jesus’s time than today.
Further, Jesus cautions against swearing by our heads because we cannot make them white or black. In this case, our heads mean our lives. Many people are in the habit of solemnly declaring what should happen to them if their statement is false or if they don’t fulfil their promises. Jesus says we should stop all that.
How To Avoid The Consequence
Jesus stated our communications should be limited to yes or no. In other words, we should respond yes or no and never affirm our declarations by swearing.
Jesus concludes the scripture by stating that saying anything more than yes or no is evil. Put differently, He does not want us to affirm our statements by swearing. Instead, He wants us to say yes or no.
Takeaway From the Passage
Although people find it difficult to believe what others say, swearing by heaven, earth, yourself, or anything else is wrong. Jesus says that any communication, more than yes or no, is evil. And every evil act attracts severe negative consequences. Therefore, always say yes or no to avoid the negative repercussion.
