Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (1 John 3:1 KJV)
What Manner of Love Has The Father Shown Us?
Today’s scripture asks what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that we shall be called the children of God. The Father has shown us tremendous love by making us worthy to be called His children. It is not just a title but a profound privilege that sets us apart. Being called a child of God is the most incredible honour anyone can have. Unfortunately, the world does not recognise our prominence because it doesn’t know our Father. Even some children of God don’t recognise the significance of being a child of God.
Who is a Child of God?
We were all born into this world by our mothers. But when a person receives Christ as their Saviour, the person is crucified with Christ, making their old nature with its desires and lust die.
Remarkably, as Christ rose from the dead, the person will also rise with Him. That resurrection is a new birth, making them born of God, that is, a child of God. Therefore, a child of God is someone who has received Christ as their Saviour, leading to the death of their old nature and a rebirth by God.
The Implications of Being a Child of God
Being a child of God Almighty, the creator of the heavens and earth, is the most outstanding honour anyone can have. It has many implications, but we will discuss three in this article.
- Being a child of God reconciles you to God (2 Corinthians 5:18) and makes Jesus your sibling and God your Father (John 20:17 NIV). Consequently, God sees and loves you as Jesus.
- Becoming a child of God makes you eligible to pray. A person must establish a Father-child relationship with God before qualifying to pray. God is not obliged to answer the prayers of someone who is not His child. But He answers the prayers of His children. That explains why the Bible says that if earthly fathers who are evil can give good gifts to their children, how much more is our heavenly Father who is good? The Father answers all His children’s prayers. No wonder the Bible says that the prayer of the righteous produces amazing results. So, as a child of God, we pray believing because we are sure that God will answer our prayers.
- As children of God, we regain the dominion and authority we had before the fall of man. Before the fall of man, we had dominion over the devil. However, when Man failed in the Garden, we lost the dominion and authority to the devil. Subsequently, after Christ paid for our sins with His blood, He spoiled principalities and powers, made a public show of them (Colossians 2:15), and restored the power to us. So, now, the devil doesn’t have power over us. Instead, we have powers over him.
What manner of love Has the Father shown us that we are called the children of God? Considering the meaning and significance of being called children of God, it’s incredible that God gave us that privilege. Praise Be God almighty!
