Embrace Your Role As The Salt Of The Earth

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. (Matthew 5:13 AMPC)
In today’s Bible verse, part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses a metaphor that we are the salt of the earth. He warns that if the salt loses its taste, it cannot be restored again, but men will throw it out and walk on it since it is no longer good for anything. To understand the true meaning of the verse, you must first know the purpose of salt.

The Purpose Of Salt
Salt is a white crystalline substance used as a seasoning or preservative. Did Jesus compare us to it as a seasoning, preservative or both? By reading the entire verse, we see that Jesus says that if it loses its taste, the saltiness cannot be restored again. Jesus’s mention of it losing its taste indicates that he refers to salt as a seasoning, not a preservative.
Understanding Our Role
- Jesus’ likening of us as a seasoning means that, as Christians, we must enhance the world’s flavour.
- We enhance the world’s flavour by living exemplary lives and positively impacting lives around us and society to glorify God. That can be through kindness, forgiveness, and service to others. By doing so, we glorify God and inspire others to do the same.
- The verse implies that believing Christ died for your sins is insufficient to succeed as a Christian. After receiving Christ, you must impact the lives of people around you.
- When a Christian does not impact people, they lose their usefulness, which cannot be restored again.
- Those who lose their usefulness are thrown out and walked upon by people.
As a Christian, you must live a good life worthy of emulation. Abstain from sin, be kind-hearted and forgiving, and impact lives around you. Your understanding of today’s scripture will automatically empower you to make an impact on Earth., which in turn will increase your faith and enable you to achieve your goals effortlessly.
